It’s been a long time coming.
For the first time in 36 years, McPherson College’s women’s tennis team is the KCAC champion.
The Bulldogs clinched the title in convincing fashion here Monday with a 9-0 blanking of county rival Bethany College. Mac finished KCAC play 7-0 and will be the favorite this weekend at the conference tournament at Wichita, with Bethel expected to provide the toughest competition.
This was a no-doubter as just one of the nine matches was close.
Winning singles matches for the Bulldogs were Emma Sheehan, Nicole Vorhees, Brooke Vorhees, Brittany Gourlay, Claire Crossman and Ashley Allmon. The only close match was Crossman, who won 7-6, 6-4. In the other five matches, the Bulldogs lost no more than two games in any set.
The Vorhees sisters played No. 1 doubles, while other teams were Sheehan-Gourley and Chandler Short-Kara Wright as second-year coach Jeff Benito used much of his roster, signifying the Bulldogs’ depth. The Bulldogs lost only four games total in the three matches.
