MAIZE – McPherson High’s tennis team is really starting to roll.

The Bullpups turned in a terrific performance Tuesday in winning the Maize Invitational, outlasting Goddard 25-21 for the team title.

Wichita Collegiate was third with 20. Rounding out the order were Maize (16), Hutchinson (13), Maize South (12), Carroll (6) and Dodge City (3).

“The team is playing well, and starting to click and play to our potential,” MHS coach Tyler Brown said. “We have won four out of the five meets we have gone to and the one we didn't was a big multi-classification of top teams in the state.”

Doubles continues to be the Bullpups’ strong suit. Twins Peter and Ryan Horton were 4-0 to win the No. 1 division, and the ever-improving team of Luke Williams and Dylan Stos were 4-0 at No. 2.

The Bullpups got a huge boost from No. 2 singles player Kento Aizawa, who was 4-0 for first place. Gallagher Martin-Chavez was 1-4 for seventh at No. 1.

The Bullpups have another huge tournament coming up Saturday when it’s the exclusive Wichita Collegiate Tournament of Champions, which is reserved only for the best of the best.

“It will be a tough test,” Brown said. “If we can place in the top six or seven that will mean a lot, especially when most of the teams there will probably finish Top 3 in their classification.  I think with such a tough schedule it really preps us for regionals.  I really feel all six of our guys are gaining confidence and feeling like we can really make a run to be one of the best teams in 4A.”
