WICHITA — KCAC men’s tennis champion Bethany College dominated the postseason honors announced today.
Bethany’s Vic Bateman was named KCAC Coach of the Year. The Swedes also received the Player of the Year award (Maneul Raga) and the Newcomer of the Year award (Edgardo Tapia). Raga was 17-2 in singles competition and 19-2 in doubles. Tapia was 14-4 in singles competition and 19-2 in doubles.
Bethany's Mensford Owusu earned KCAC All-Conference first team with a singles record of 18-3 and a doubles record of 21-1. Joining Owusu on the first team are Raga and Tapia.
Bethany’s Michiel Van Den Bogaert made the second team. He had a 13-4 singles record and went 8-7 in doubles.
"The guys have played well so far with a very new team this year,” Bateman said. “All four that made the All-KCAC teams have taken turns being our best player on different days. We legitimately could have had one or two more on the squad in my mind.”
The Swedes won the KCAC with a perfect league record of 7-0. Bethany also is currently 17-2 overall, with the two losses coming against nationally ranked NCAA Division II opponents. Bateman has guided the men's tennis team to 11 straight conference championships. Bethany will travel to Wichita Friday for the KCAC Tournament.
