LINDSBORG — The Bethany College wrestling program was proud to accept a donation from the Lindsborg Quarterback Club to purchase banners to be displayed in Stroble Gibson Gymnasium.
There will be four banners purchased with the donation. One banner will display All-Americans and Academic All-Americans. Another will display the team results. The third banner will show the lettermen winners and the final banner will show all of the National Qualifiers.
The Lindsborg Quarterback Club has been in existence since the 1950s. The club originally was the "Bethany Quarterback Club," but later changed the name when the organization decided to not only support the college, but also work to better the Lindsborg schools, including Smoky Valley High School and Middle School.
The Lindsborg Quarterback Club is open to any supporters of Bethany College and the Lindsborg schools, with a small membership fee. Dwight Swisher serves as president while Don Bengtson serves as treasurer.
"We are truly blessed to have support from such a gracious organization within the community of Lindsborg. With the contributions from the Lindsborg Quarterback Club, we were able to create a sense of belonging on campus, increase our brand recognition and recognize the efforts of our young men by displaying their accomplishments," Bethany coach Cody Garcia said. "These banners will serve as an everyday visual reminder of the team and individual goals we have for the program. I am excited to see more names and dreams recorded on these banners in the coming years."
The Swede wrestlers have excelled on the mat and in the classroom since the start of the program in the fall of 2011. In its brief history, the Swedes have had one wrestler be named All-American. Colby Crank was named an All-American in 2012, 2013 and this past year as well. Bethany has had five Academic All-Americans. Zach Anderson, Taylor Baird, and Crank were Academic All-Americans this year. Crank was also an All-American in 2013 and 2012. Brandon Goodwin, and Courtney Strauss were All-Americans in 2012. The Swedes have had 15 national qualifiers: four in 2012, four in 2013 and seven in 2014. This year Crank was also the NAIA national runner-up in the 149-pound weight class.
"We are grateful for the Lindsborg Quarterback Club's generous support of the Bethany College wrestling team. The banners purchased will allow our wrestling teams accomplishments to be visible to the team, recruits and any other visitors to Stroble Gibson Gymnasium," Dane Pavlovich, Dean of Athletics at Bethany College, said.
