GARDEN CITY – The Bethany College women's golf team finished the first day of the KCAC Championship Tournament Monday in third place.

The Swedes were behind Southwestern College and Ottawa University, but ahead of Sterling College. The Swedes had three of the top 15 golfers after the first round.

Bethany had a first-round team total score of 432. The Swedes were led by Arianna Bryant through the first day, as she was tied for 10th place and shot an opening-round 103. Morgan Nelson is one shot back, finishing the day with a 104 and was in 13th place.

The Swedes’ Melodeigh Christiansen finished her first round in a tie for 15th place after a 111. Rachel Meyer (114) and Tiffany Youngquist (161) completed the scoring.

"Given the extreme conditions and the limited practice we have had, I was pleased with the results," Bethany coach Jon Daniels said. "The women, some in their first golf tournament and having extreme wind, did not panic or complain but went out and gave it all they had. We made quite a few mistakes but I am sure they will learn from them. I am proud of them all."

The tournament is scheduled to be completed today, weather permitting.
