There’s no dominant powers like Hays or Maize this year, but there will still be plenty of top-flight challengers Thursday when McPherson High hosts its annual invitational track and field meet at McPherson Stadium.

The Bullpups certainly will be tested by Newton, which is a 5A power. Other teams on hand are Great Bend, Goddard Eisenhower, Pratt, Valley Center and Wichita North.

“We are finally getting healthy as a team this week, which is nice to see,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “We will be close to full strength on the boys and girls side Thursday. Great Bend and Newton will be tough to beat, but we have the capability to finish at the top if everyone performs the way they are capable of performing.”

The action actually gets under way at 3 p.m. with the boys and girls javelin at the high school. Then it’s on to the stadium for field events at 4 p.m., followed by track prelims at 4:30. Track finals are 15 minutes following the completion of the prelims.

Here is an order of events. Where an event is listed, the other division will follow:

4:00 — Girls high jump (boys to follow), boys pole vault (girls), boys long jump (girls), girls triple jump (boys), boys shot put (girls), boys discus (girls), girls and boys steeplechase.
