EL DORADO — State-ranked tennis teams McPherson High and Wichita Collegiate battled down to the wire Monday in the AVCTL Division III-IV Championships before the Spartans eventually prevailed.
Collegiate, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3-2-1A, scored 64 points to outlast the Bullpups, the No. 2 team in Class 4A, who scored 54.
Other totals were Buhler (47), Winfield (45), Circle (33), Wellington (27), El Dorado (7) and Augusta (3).
The Bullpups’ heavy scoring came in doubles. Dylan Stos and Luke Williams won the No. 2 division handily, winning 6-1, 6-1 in their championship match.
At No. 1 doubles, in a matchup of potential state championship teams, McPherson’s Ryan Horton and Peter Horton were edged by Collegiate’s Travis Osland and Mubasshir Karim 7-5, 6-4.
