MOBILE, Al. — Two teams from the Midwest will travel all the way to Alabama to compete against each other in the opening round of the 34th annual NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship.
The 24-team, single-elimination national championship will take place May 13-17 in Mobile, Ala.
McPherson College, ranked No. 25 in the country, drew the No. 12 Graceland University Yellowjackets of Iowa, with the match set for 8:30 a.m. on May 13 at the Mobile Tennis Center.
McPherson currently boasts a 16-6 overall record and it won all nine of its conference matches this season. The Bulldogs are led coach Jeff Benito, who was recently named the ITA's Central Region Coach of the Year. He also received the same honor from the KCAC.
On the court, Mac placed three athletes on the All-KCAC first team in Emma Sheehan, Nikki Vorhees and Brooke Vorhees, while Brittany Gourlay made the second squad; both Sheehan and Nikki Vorhees were unanimous selections.
Graceland won the Heart of America Athletic Conference to make it to the national championships. This is the second time the Yellowjackets have qualified for the tournament. GU posted an overall record of 14-3 on the year and breezed through the HAAC, going 8-0 against their league foes, including postseason play. The Lady Yellowjackets placed two athletes on their conference's first team and another on the second.
Graceland enters the tournament having won 10 straight matches themselves, with its last loss coming on March 20. It has only one other loss against an NAIA opponent this season, falling to Oklahoma Baptist 6-3 in February.
