Tornado spotted in McPherson County Sunday night, damage assessments to come

Severe weather kept families awake late Sunday night in McPherson County, as a Tornado Warning sent people to their basements for about an hour.

The first report of a lowering of clouds in McPherson County took place at 9:24 p.m. southwest of Highway K-61 at Comanche Road in McPherson County.

At 9:53 a tornado was reported on the ground between Comanche Road and Dakota Road on Highway K-61. The funnel also appeared to touch down briefly at 20th Avenue and Highway 56 around 10:02 p.m. and a passerby reported a cone tornado on the ground moving west at I-135 milemarker 59 at 10:04 p.m.

The final report of a lowering of the clouds was at 10:21 p.m. north and west of Canton.

As of 9:30 Monday morning, the damage reported from the storm was some power poles down in the area of 8th and Dakota Road in McPherson County, some irrigation equipment strewn about between 10th and 11th on Frontier.
