McPherson High basketball coach Kurt Kinnamon has announced the dates for the annual Bullpup Summer Basketball Camps.

Two sessions are scheduled this year, June 2-5 and June 23-26. They will be held at McPherson High School, both in the Roundhouse and Auxiliary Gym.

Kinnamon has spent 19 years as MHS coach and this past season the Bullpups won their fourth state championship under his guidance. He’s also had vast experience in working summer camps for 28 years, having been an instructor at the KU, Indiana and North Carolina camps.

“I have been fortunate to get to help with three of the premier camps in the nation and observe some of the top coaches in the country,” said Kinnamon, who has worked under Roy Williams, Bill Self and Bob Knight. “It has always been my belief that when children learn the game at an early age, it is important that they be taught the right way by people that love the game. Fundamentals are important and playing on rims set at the appropriate height is essential to that.”

Kinnamon has definite goals for the program.

“Our goals are three-fold,” he said. “Number one, have fun. Number two, be safe. Number three, learn how to do things the right way and give players instruction that they can work on at home.”

Helping Kinnamon will be members of his coaching staff, as well as former Bullpup players.

Session features include:

– Talks and instruction by former Bullpup players.

– Fundamental skills stations.

— Games and contests where everyone is a winner. All campers will receive a prize.

— 8-foot goals for the younger players.

— Use of the gun shooting machine.

Here are the times for the sessions with the grades being for the 2014-15 school year:

— Boys Grades K-2 and Girls K-1 — 8:30-9:30 a.m. (McPherson girls except K,1 may only attend second session).

— Boys Grades 3-5, Girls grades 4-6 — 9:30-10:45 a.m.

— Boys Grades 6-8, girls 7-8 — 10:45 to noon.

It should be noted the seventh- and eighth-grade boys will be learning the offenses and defenses that will be used at the middle-school level.

Cost for the camp, which includes a T-shirt:

One session — $55 for one camper, $80 for two campers, $100 for three campers.

Both sessions — $80 for one camper, $110 for two campers, $125 for three campers.
