SALINA — McPherson High’s baseball team had a chance for its first sweep of the year Tuesday, but instead finished with its seventh split.

Breaking from tradition, the Bullpups won the opener 5-3 from Salina Central, but lost 10-4 in the second game. The Bullpups split all five of their home doubleheaders this season, losing the first game in each, and in their other split at Rose Hill, they also lost the opener before bouncing back.

MHS takes a 7-13 record into postseason play as it travels nearly to Colorado for a four-team event in Ulysses. The Bullpups play No. 1 seed Andale (17-3) at 2 p.m. Monday. Buhler (9-9) and Ulysses (9-9) meet in the other semi.

The Bullpups showed a lot of grit in the first game, tying it with a run in the seventh and then putting it away with two runs in the eighth. Caleb Schmidt’s two-out RBI single scored Micah McCulley to tie it, then MHS won in the eighth on a clutch two-run single by Logan Schrag.

It was a big game for Schmidt, who had three hits and picked up the win in relief of Alex Ruxlow, who blew away 10 Mustang hitters in five innings. Cody Starkel added two hits and Schrag had two RBIs.

Central jumped on MHS early in Game 2, up 6-1 after three innings. The Bullpups did scratch out runs in each of the final three innings.

Griffin Myers had two hits. McCulley took the loss and MHS’ three pitchers in the game gave up nine walks, greatly aiding the cause for the Mustangs, who are 8-10.

The MHS JVs lost the first game 4-2, but stormed back to win 17-6.

Casen Hoover took the first-game loss though he pitched well. No Bullpup had more than one hit.

MHS ripped it up at the plate in the second game, with Caleb Giddings going 4 for 5 while Alex Kalkhorst collected three hits and drove in four. Jeffrey Reed and Jacob Loecker added two hits apiece. Reed and Michael Saverino drove in two runs apiece and Jack Reifschneider scored three. Raine Reitsma was the winner, fanning nine.
