WINFIELD — It couldn’t have gone much better for McPherson High’s tennis team Friday in the opening day of the Class 4A State Tournament.

MHS qualified both of its doubles teams for the semifinals and they’re in opposite brackets.

Ryan Horton and Peter Horton won their matches by scores of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the Final Four. They are playing Andover Central’s Cameron Davis and Jacob Thompson this morning in the semis.

Dylan Stos and Luke Williams won by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-4. They are playing Independence’s Josh Hilger and Sam Hilger in this morning’s semifinals.

To win the team title, MHS probably needs for both doubles teams to make the finals. The Bullpups are running neck-and-neck with Topeka Hayden for the team title. The Wildcats are expected to have the two finalists in singles, brothers Tommy and Blake Hunter, and have another doubles team alive in the consolation bracket.

The Bullpups’ Kento Aizawa went 2-1 on the day in singles and is playing McPherson regional champion Marcel Rimrodt in the consolation round.
