MARION — Canton-Galva’s Cody Savage, Moundridge’s Deshawn Pfeiff and Inman’s Emma Aberg were among the spectacular performers Friday in the Heart of America League Track and Field Championships, which were dominated on both sides by Berean Academy and Marion.
Savage won the 100 (11.0) and long jump (20-9). He had only started long jumping recently and had a tremendous mark for someone with limited meet experience.
Pfeiff also was a double winner, soaring 12-6 to win the pole vault, then raced to a 53.8 to capture the 400.
Aberg, the freshman sensation, won the 200 in 26.2 and was on the Teutons’ winning 4 x 100 relay team that also included Nicole Neufeldt, Krystal Miller and Krystan Miller (50.8). In addition, Aberg was second in the 100 in what was a photo finish as she ran 12.64 and Sedgwick’s Shae Ware ran 12.63.
Other area winners were Canton-Galva’s Trey Moddelmog in the high jump (6-2), and the Moundridge duo of Ashley Holler in the high jump (4-10) and Anna Stucky in the long jump (16-6).
Berean and Marion waged quite a battle in the team races. Both are expected to be top state contenders at Wichita State next week.
On the boys’ side, Berean tallied 131 points to ease by Marion, which tallied 112 1/2.
Canton-Galva was sixth with 43, Moundridge was seventh with 33 and Inman was ninth with 29 1/2.
On the girls’ side, Berean barely got past Marion 103-99, with Moundridge fifth with 70 and Inman was sixth with 52. Canton-Galva did not score.
