GULF SHORES, Ala. — The McPherson College track and field team walked away from the 2014 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with five NAIA All-American plaques as the women's 4 x 100 relay unit finished fifth and Paul Rotering claimed eighth in the shot put.
"I was very happy with the way our athletes competed this weekend," Mac head coach Cameron Magnall said. "I think they performed very well considering the pressure that the national meet creates."
The relay squad, which ran a time of 47.12, was comprised of Sharica Pleasant, Taylor Smiley, Kaley Kinnamon and Jazmine Alexander. The group posted the seventh-fastest time after the preliminaries at 47.21. This is the first All-American honors for Smiley, Kinnamon and Alexander, but was the second for Pleasant, who finished sixth in the 2014 NAIA Indoor Championships in the heptathlon.
Rotering entered Saturday's shot put sitting 10th out of 19 competitors and posted a 15.69m with his final toss in preliminaries, sliding him into finals in the eighth position. Just two competitors out threw their prelim distance allowing Rotering to maintain his All-America position of eighth place.
McPherson had one heart-breaking finish at the meet as Arryana Barton entered finals of the women's shot put sitting seventh after throwing 13.80m in the prelims. In finals, she upped her mark to 13.88, which broke the Mac school record but was passed by two other athletes to put her into ninth, one spot out of being an All-American.
Four of the competing Bulldogs finished their outdoor careers this weekend in Rotering, Pleasant, Barton and Megan Pohlmann. Pleasant and Barton both have a year of eligibility left for indoor track and field.
