Former McPherson High All-State quarterback Tyler Matthews is transferring to Southern Mississippi.
The holder of virtually every passing record at MHS, Matthews signed with TCU out of high school and spent his first season as a redshirt. He then was a backup last year, attempting only three passes. He was regarded as one of the Top 10 high school quarterbacks in the country coming out of high school and played in the U.S. Army All-Star Game in San Antonio.
Matthews announced his decision on Twitter late last week. “Can’t wait to get going,” he posted. “Southern Miss Football.”
Matthews, who threw for more than 5,500 yards in two years at MHS, will have two years of eligibility remaining. He will have to sit out this season due to the transfer rule.
The Golden Eagles, a member of Conference USA, were 1-11 this past season.
