TOPEKA — Smoky Valley’s Claire Denk closed her high school swimming career in style Saturday by placing in the finals in two events at the Class 5-1A State Championships.
Denk was sixth in the 50 freestyle in 25.33 and seventh in the 100 freestyle in 56.27.
Denk swam for the combined McPherson High-Smoky Valley team during the regular season, but once state arrived the team was forced to split. Denk scored 25 state points.
Katie Wurm was MHS’ only competitor on Saturday, taking 12th in the 200 freestyle in 2:11.96. The Bullpups scored 5 points in the meet, won by Blue Valley Southwest with 208 points.
The state meet was the last for MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher, who is moving to Colorado this summer.
