WICHITA — When Hesston’s Ryan Schadler competes next year for Wichita State, he’ll try to duplicate what he accomplished on Saturday in the Class 3A State Track and Field Championships.

Schadler scored 34 of the Swathers’ 55 points to lead them to the third and final 3A plaque. Only Phillipsburg (69) and Beloit (64) finished ahead of Hesston.

Schadler won the gold in the 400 (49.36) and long jump (22-7 1/4) and was second in the 200 (22.75). He rounded out his placings with a third in the 100 (11.47).

Teammate Justin Smith joined Schadler as a gold-medal winner, taking the triple jump in 44-6.

Other individual placers for Hesston were Austin Bollinger (fourth in the 800 in 2:00.1) and Zach Esau in the 1,600 (seventh in 4:40.14).

Hesston also was fifth in the 4 x 80o relay, with runners including Jonathan Weber, Cody Nuss, Luccus Schmucker and Bolinger. That unit ran 8:27.98.

The Swather girls almost made it two plaques. They scored 41 points to just miss out in fourth, with the Top 3 including Cheney (69), Garden Plain (54) and Hiawatha (43).

The 4 x 100 relay team (50.02) took second and it included Ali Jost, Jessanna Nebel, Hannah Schmitt and Michaela Adams.

It was a big day for Jost. She was third in both the 100 (12.83) and 200 (26.34). She also ran a leg on the 4 x 400 relay that was third in 4:07.79 and also included Nebel, Schmitt and Kylie Brenneman.

Also with thirds were Mikala Heddin in the 3,200 (11:35.87) and Schmitt in the high jump (tied at 5-0).

Adams and Veronica Ziegler rounded out the Swather points. Adams was eighth in the 100 (13.18) and Ziegler was taking sixth in the triple jump (34-11 3/4).
