McPherson’s U-17 American Legion baseball team recorded its first win of the season Friday in the Hutch Next Level Showcase that is being played at various venues around the area.
Post 24 received a terrific pitching performance from Caleb Schmidt in a 5-1 victory over the Arkansas City Black Diamonds at Grant Complex.
Schmidt allowed just three hits and walked only one, while fanning five. The only run he allowed was unearned.
The offense did just enough, with Brody Burney leading the way with two hits. Schmidt scored two runs as McPherson cobbled together four runs in the fourth inning, which proved to be the difference.
In its first game Friday at Buhler, McPherson managed only three hits in losing a 13-0 verdict to the Wichita Rawlings Reds, who scored 10 first-inning runs and lived off that advantage the rest of the way.
McPherson’s hits were singles bySchmidt, Burney and Kolby Reed.
Micah McCulley took the loss.
McPherson is now 1-2 on the season and scheduled to contine play today.
