LINDSBORG — Jonathan Newsom has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for head coach Clair Oleen and the Bethany College Swedes in the 2014-2015 academic year.
Newsom, a 6-4 guard who hails from Denver, comes to Bethany from Northwest College in Powell, Wyo. He was a Defensive Player of the Year, but he also averaged 9 points per game and 3.1 rebounds per game. He shot 34 percent from 3-point range, 50 percent from the field, and 75.8 percent from the free throw line.
While at Hinkley High School in Aurora, Colo., Newsom played both basketball (small forward) and football (quarterback/wide receiver).
"We are excited to have Jonathan Newsom choose to continue his education at Bethany College and become a part of Bethany Basketball," Oleen said. "Jonathan is a super young man and a very good addition to our basketball team. Jonathan is a very complete player who does a lot of things well. He can shoot the 3, score from mid-range and with his physical strength, he finishes very well at the rim. Jonathan is a very good defender who is a big and strong guard."
Newsom is the son of Felicia Newsom and Djuan James, and plans to study in communication and psychology while at Bethany.
