McPherson Country Club proved to have sharp teeth Friday in the first round of the 31st annual McPherson City Golf Tournament.
Windy conditions and slick greens sent scores soaring higher than they have ever been in the first round. Only one player in the field managed to shoot in the 70s and it was three-time defending champion Treg Fawl with a 77.
He takes a three-shot lead into Saturday’s round at Rolling Acres, which is generally where he makes his big move.
He’s up on McPherson High sophomore-to-be Jacob Lackey, former two-time champion Nick Ikenberry and Luke Aichele, who came into the tournament having only played a handful of times.
Kelly Sorenson, Ed Bate, Craig Corrigan and Kurt Kinnamon all shot 81s.
Treg Fawl and his father Tony lead the two-man division after a 72, one stroke ahead of Jeff Warren and Rick Davison, while two shots up on Corrigan and Kinnamon.
The final round is Sunday at Turkey Creek.
