Prior to the start of the second annual Bob Hooper Classic this weekend, McPherson Post 24 coach Tony Schmidt said he would be happy with three wins in five games.
So how does he feel by winning four of five, especially with the first game being a loss?
Ecstatic, for sure.
Post 24 finished 4-1 with two more wins on Sunday and improved to 9-5 on the season.
A five-run third inning ignited the first-game success with the Wichita Sluggers, 13-4.
McPherson again broke out the bats with 12 hits, two each by Cody Starkel, Caleb Schmidt, Micah McCulley and Kolby Reed. Schmidt had three RBIs, while McCulley and Jack Reifschneider scored three apiece.
Eleven of the 12 hits were singles, with Starkel’s double the only extra-base knock.
Marcus McDaniel scattered four hits and walked just one to pick up the victory.
McPherson completed its nice tourney stint with a 13-0 pasting of BTL Academy White, as Jacob Loecker was dazzling with a one-hitter, fanning five.
Big hits were a triple by McCulley and a double by Burney. Post 24 continued its rash of hits, picking up 12. Burney, Loecker and Griffin Myers all had two. A nine-run fourth inning blew the lid off the game.
