U-18 Express wins tourney title

AUGUSTA — McPherson’s U-18 Lady Express won four straight softball games over the weekend to win the 18A Division in the USSSA West State Tournament.

A summary:

• Lady Express 7, Renegades Gray 2 — Madison Hoffman was nails on the mound by allowing only one earned run, and helped her own cause at the plate by going 3 for 4, including a triple. Jasmine Wann drove in three runs with a double and single, while Chelsey Kerr hit a homer and drove in two runs. Also with two hits were Julie Sinclair and Marissa Axelson.

• Lady Express 9, Renegades 18A 4 — A wild five-run eighth inning broke the 4-all tie and propelled the Express to the key win. McPherson belted out 16 hits, including doubles by Wann and Hannah Marshall, who had three hits along with Kerr. Sinclair went the distance to pick up the win.

• Lady Express 7, Blue Ice 3 — A four-run sixth inning moved the Express out to a 7-0 lead before Blue Ice scored three runs in its final at-bat. Wann homered, while Axelson smoked a triple and double, good for two RBIs. Marshall also stroked a double. Allison Weber scattered 10 hits to pick up the win.

• Lady Express 10, Blue Ice 2 — It was again no dice for Blue Ice, as McPherson needed only four innings for the win. The Express roped 14 more hits, with Sinclair, Marshall, Axelson, Kerr and Weber all collecting two. Marshall and Axelson had doubles for the lone extra-base hits. Marshall and Kerr had two RBIs apiece. Sinclair was the winner.

McPherson is now 7-2 on the year.
