HESSTON — Hesston High graduate Ryan Schadler, whose athletic season was almost too good to be true, was named the winner of the Barry Sanders Male Athlete of the Year award Thursday during the Greater Wichita Sports Banquet.
Schadler, who beat out Kapaun golfer Sam Stevens and Derby’s all-around star Jeremy Dunham for the award, compiled a stunning resume.
He rushed for more than 2,400 yards and scored 42 touchdowns this past fall. He had a 525-yard, seven-touchdown game against El Dorado and for the year averaged more than a jaw-dropping 14 yards a carry.
In basketball, he was a vital cog in the Swathers capturing the Class 3A state championship. Hesston went 26-0 and had very few serious challenges along the way.
This spring, he won a pair of gold medals (400 and the long jump), took second in the 200 and third in the 100 as he scored more points than most 3A teams in the meet.
Schadler has signed to compete in track and field at Wichita State for next season.
