Don’t look now, but McPherson’s U-17 American Legion baseball team has cobbled together a healthy eight-game winning streak.
With a pair of run-rule victories over Great Bend Wednesday night at Grant Complex, Post 24 is now 13-5 on the year and building up a head of steam with the zone tournament not too far in the distant future.
McPherson won 14-4 and 13-3 decisions, taking advantage of the myriad of miscues that were generously handed to them.
McPherson coach Tony Schmidt was expecting this to be a much stronger challenge than the one received just 24 hours earlier from the Wichita Sluggers, but it proved to be more of the same.
“I think we’re where we need to be,” said Schmidt, whose team will play four more games this weekend in Alma to complete a gauntlet of an eight-game week. “This is good for our confidence, but we need to see some (better) pitching, too.”
Schmidt doesn’t want to see his team lapse into a false sense of security. But still, 27 runs in two games is nothing to balk at.
McPherson sprayed around 10 singles in the first game and was the benefactor of 10 walks as it clogged the basepaths with runners. Brodie Burney and Cody Starkel collected two hits apiece, with Burney driving in three and Starkel two. The only downer on the night was Burney leaving with a pulled hamstring and he sat out the second game.
Marcus McDaniel labored at times, but went the distance to pick up the win.
A seven-run third inning ignited McPherson to its second-game victory. Jacob Loecker was the winner and Starkel finished up. Post 24 actually mustered only seven hits, with doubles by Micah McCulley and Kolby Reed. Great Bend’s clanky defense helped McPherson greatly.
Caleb Schmidt had two hits for McPherson, while Starkel drove in three runs.
