ALMA — Hopefully, the end is nowhere in sight.
McPherson American Legion Post 24’s white-hot Under-17 team continued to knock down opponents like a 300 bowler Sunday with two more successes, running its winning streak to 12 games.
After meandering through the season’s first 10 games at 5-5, the 17s have swelled their record to 17-5.
McPherson completed a 4-0 run through the Alma Tournament with a 9-0 rout of Burlington before surviving a 5-4 threat from Oskaloosa.
In the first game, Cody Starkel continued the pitching trend for Post 24 by striking out 10 and walking only two. A seven-run fourth inning broke the game open. The bottom third of the order accounted for five runs, with Jacob Loecker and Casen Hoover scoring two apiece and Jack Reifschneider added one.
Against Oskaloosa, Post 24 pushed across a run in the sixth inning to secure the closest victory the team has had in a while.
Micah McCulley’s homer was the big hit of the game, as McPherson stroked nine singles otherwise. Loecker and Reifschneider continued to deliver from the bottom part of the order with two hits apiece as did McCulley. Hoover drove in two runs, including the game-winner.
McCulley worked six innings and struck out eight, with McDaniel coming on in relief.
