Salina Symphony Announces 2014-2015 Performances

Experience a fusion of orchestral music, stirring vocals, creative dance and stunning visuals during the five performance dates of the 2014-2015 Salina Symphony Season!

The season opens Sunday, Oct. 5 with one of the most enduringly popular solos in the piano literature, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, featuring piano virtuoso Tatiana Tessman. The Symphony will also perform von Suppe’s Poet and Peasant Overture as well as Mozart’s Symphony No. 24 (the “little” G minor).

Sunday, Nov. 9, “Our Favorite Things” will transport audiences to the glitter and glamour of Broadway for an afternoon of Rodgers and Hammerstein favorites from The Sound of Music, South Pacific, The King and I, Oklahoma and more. This celebration of musical theatre will showcase a number of celebrated local and regional vocalists.

The ever-popular Christmas Festival will be performed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13 and 14. Celebrate the season with festive song and dance from the Symphony, Peggy Simms’ Center for Theatre Arts Dancers, Salina Chorale, KWU Chorale and Salina Youth Choir.

Experience a fusion of classical music & contemporary dance Sunday, March 29, featuring popular American classics such as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Bernstein’s West Side Story. This collage of American music will feature central characters who will tell a story through music and dance.

The season will conclude Sunday, May 3 with a celebration of women in music. The program will include Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling and colorful orchestral suite, Scheherazade, Songs from Letters by world-renowned composer Libby Larsen, and a premiere composition by KWU alumna Katherine Falk.

Additional offerings this season will include a magical journey into storytelling as only the timeless tales of Disney can evoke. Brought to life by the talents of four Broadway-caliber singers and featuring high resolution animated feature film sequences, the Jan. 25 production of “Disney in Concert – Tale as Old as Time” will feature music from Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Tangled, The Lion King and more.

The Symphony will also present “Symphony at Sunset” June 6, an outdoor performance held on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. The annual D-Day Commemoration Concert will feature patriotic favorites as well as popular classics.

The Salina Youth Symphony concerts will be held November 16 and April 12. These inspiring performances will feature more than 170 members of the Youth Symphony, Junior Youth Symphony and Preparatory Orchestra.

Season tickets are available for $120 and $100, plus ticket fees.
