HAYS — McPherson’s streaking American Legion baseball team enters zone play Tuesday as the one to beat.

Post 24, which has won 14 of its last 15 games to improve to 19-6, is the prohibitive favorite when the four-team tournament gets under way.

Top-seed McPherson plays Hays at noon at Larks Field, with Caleb Schmidt expected to get the start, though coach Tony Schmidt has a reservoir of pitchers to choose from. A win and Post 24 would go up against the Salina-Great Bend winner at 2:30, also at Larks Field.

Should McPherson lose to Hays, it would play at 2:30 at Hays High.

Two games are scheduled for Wednesday, with the finals at 7 p.m. Should an extra game be needed since the tournament is double-elimination, it would be played at 6 p.m. Thursday.

McPherson has swept both Salina and Great Bend, but has not played Hays.
