Hesston Municipal edged ahead of Turkey Creek Golf Course during the second stage of the I-135 Cup contested Sunday on the latter’s home course.
Hesston and Turkey Creek had entered the day deadlocked at 8 points apiece after the first round of competition recently at Hesston, while Salina Muni was third with 5.
Hesston scored 8 1/2 points Sunday to move to 16 1/2, while McPherson scored 7 1/2 to improve to 15. Salina again scored 5 points and will need a big charge on its home course Aug. 10 to make up ground.
McPherson picked up three points in scratch play, led by Kelly Sorenson, who shot a 69 in the windy conditions and won his match 7 & 6. Also winning scratch matches were Mark Wash (3 & 1) and Cliff Hawkes (2 & 1). Also competing was Zack Locke.
Turkey Creek also was strong in the Modified Chapman, going 2-0. Winning teams were Stan Smith and Bob Balding (2 & 1) and Ziya Gunay and Gordon Reimer (score not reported).
The Creek was 2-0 as well in the Best-Ball Handicap Division, with the teams including Scott Davis and Alan Porter, and Chad Alexander and Jay Reissig. Scores were not reported.
McPherson did not score in the net handicap matches. Competing were Bill Gately, Jack Rader, Denis Everhart and Rich Penner.
McPherson’s half-point came in the pro matches as TCC head professional John Hastert drew in his match with Hesston.
