TOPEKA — After a slow start, McPherson’s Under-16 Lady Express softball team caught fire for a three-game stretch before eventually placing fifth for a solid showing in the USSSA World Series.

The team lost its first two games, then reeled off three victories in a row before losing its finale for a 3-3 ledger.

Here is a summary:

• Nebraska Outlaws 9, Express 3 — Nebraska jumped on McPherson for five runs in the first inning and later added four in the third. Mayci James crushed a triple and Makayla Luce added a double. Elle Schrag was the pitcher of record.

• Missouri Midwest Nationals 6, Express 5 — The Nationals scored five in the first and held off McPherson to drop the Lady Express to 0-2. Teagan Pacey homered, while Elle Schrag and Brooke Schrag hit doubles. Luce took the loss.

• Express 10, Missouri Tornadoes 0 — Elle Schrag hit the opening batter, then was perfect the rest of the way in throwing a four-inning no-hitter, fanning six. Gracy Feil’s double was McPherson’s only extra-base blow. McPherson had a pair of five-run innings. Pacey, Kaylee Hardin and Emma Krehbiel were all credited with two RBIs.

• Express 6, Missouri Red Hawks 4 — Feil’s three-run double capped a four-run rally in the fourth inning as McPherson stayed alive. Elle Schrag was the winner and also doubled, as did James.

• Express 7, Oklahoma Game Time 3 — Another four-run fourth-inning rally was the impetus to the win as the Express continued the never-say-die attitude. Pacey drove in two runs to back the pitching of Luce. James had a double.

• Lightning 5, Express 1  — There was no comeback this time as the Lightning scored four in the first and held McPherson at bay. Grace Colaw drove in Feil for the only run. Elle Schrag took the loss.
