LEAVENWORTH — McPherson American Legion baseball coach Tony Schmidt isn’t even sure who is team is going to play today in the Mid States Regional Tournament.
“It’s either Missouri or North Dakota,” he said this morning from his hotel room. “We watched some of the game and I think Missouri was ahead 4-3 when we left. It doesn’t matter. Both teams are good.”
Post 24 moved on in the winner’s bracket Thursday with a 6-4 victory over the Texas champion Texarkana Bulldogs, who finished second in last year’s tourney. McPherson is now 29-7 on the year, 24-2 over its last 26 games.
“Other than Newton’s senior team, that’s the best team we have played this year,” Schmidt said. “They were fast, they run well and hit well. Their pitcher threw 83, 84 (mph.) We were just able to ham and egg it like we have been.”
Micah McCulley notched his fourth postseason victory, with relief help from Caleb Schmidt. McCulley toiled five innings, allowing four runs but only two of those were earned. He did walk six, but countered that with eight strikeouts. Schmidt pitched two innings of spotless relief, working around three hits.
Junction City’s Christian Ozores, added to the roster which is legal under tourney rules since Kolby Reed was unavailable, had a triple, single and two RBIs to help the McPherson cause. Schmidt also had two hits and two RBIs.
Marcus McDaniel will be handed the ball for today’s 2 p.m. game. A victory and McPherson would play at 11 a.m. Saturday. A loss and it would play a late-night special tonight at 9:30 p.m.
