LEAVENWORTH — There would be no long, glorious run back through the loser’s bracket for McPherson American Legion Post 24 this time.

McPherson’s wondrous and fruitful baseball season ended Saturday afternoon with a 6-5 loss to the South Dakota state champions in the Mid States Regional Tournament.

Post 24 rallied from a 5-1 deficit with four sixth-inning runs to tie the game, only to see South Dakota win the game in the seventh inning on a sac fly.

McPherson ended its season with a 30-9 record. It won the Kansas Class A state title last week by reeling off six wins in a row after losing in the first round.

Post 24 finished this Mid States tourney with a 2-2 record. It won its first game in the loser’s bracket before being ousted.

McPherson sprayed about 10 singles, including two each by Caleb Schmidt, Casen Hoover and Kolby Reed. Schmidt took the loss in relief.
