McPherson High’s girls tennis team opens the 2014 season in the same place it finished the 2013 season — No. 1 in Class 4A.

The Kansas Tennis Coaches Association released its preseason state rankings Sunday with the Bullpups at the top. They return four of their top six players from last year’s state championship team, including defending state doubles champions Camry Holle and Emily Ediger, 4A state singles runner-up Ellea Ediger as well as Katlyn Reifschneider, who was sixth in the state in singles.

Independence is ranked No. 2, while completing the Top 5 are Andover Central, Topeka Hayden and Winfield.

Others to watch include Bishop Miege, Buhler and Chapman.

Shawnee Mission East is No. 1 in 6A, Andover is No. 1 in 5A and Wichita Collegiate is No. 1 in 3-2-1A.

Collegiate is teetering on the Class 4A-3A line. Classifications come out next month and Spartans coach Dave Hawley said at KCAC Media Day that it’s a good bet his team will move up to 4A.
