The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is today and tomorrow in McPherson. Donations will be taken from Noon-6pm today and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at Trinity Lutheran Church at 119 North Elm Street in McPherson.
McPherson Fire Chief Jeff Deal spoke to Mid Kansas Online about the importance of every single type of blood.
Deal said, "Ironically enough, when my dad went to the doctor and the doctor said, 'hey, we really need to get a blood transfusion for him,' Mom called up and said, 'what's your blood type?' I told her mine. She called my brothers,'what's your blood type?' We don't have his blood type. If I would have had my dad's blood type, I would have gone to Garden City that day and given him my blood as quickly as possible. But, we're not his blood type. And, so we're really at the mercy of other donors to do that. And that's really kind of how it works across the whole country."
According to statistics from the American Red Cross, the overall blood supply is at least 60,000 units below what is needed to meet immediate needs for blood. Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10 percent do.
