Swede JVs play at Hutch tonight

HUTCHINSON —  Bethany College’s football team makes its season debut tonight.

That is, the Swedes’ junior varsity.

The Swede neophytes figure to be up against it when they travel to Gowans Stadium to open the season for Hutchinson Community College.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. For live audio, video and stats, visit www.bluedragonsports.com.

Hutch is ranked No. 11 in the NCJAA national poll. The Swedes were little more than fodder for the Blue Dragons in last year’s meeting as Hutchinson rolled to a 50-0 rout.

However, Bethany figures to put a much stronger product on the field as Swede coach Manny Matsakis and his staff recruited from coast to coast. The Swedes welcomed nearly 70 new players this year and it will be interesting to see which newcomers Mataskis elects to play.

This game counts toward Hutchinson’s regular-season record. The Blue Dragons and Swedes scrimmaged recently in Lindsborg, though Bethany held out some 30 players for what at the time were academic-clearing problems, many of them having been taken care of.
