McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball team opened its season here Tuesday with a pair of setbacks in three-set matches that could easily have gone the other way.
MMS lost to Pratt (25-20, 21-25, 8-15) and Salina Lakewood (25-17, 27-29, 14-16).
“The girls lost two hard-fought matches, but I was extremely proud that they never gave up,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “They played good considering it was the first two matches of the year, but unfortunately too many missed serves and untimely errors in both matches cost us the win.”
The B-team won both its matches in straight sets, 25-17, 25-14 against Pratt and 25-13, 25-10 against Salina Lakewood.
“Good serving and teamwork helped the girls win two matches tonight,” Gehrt said. “Some of the girls have stepped up and played different positions than last year and I look forward to watching all the girls improve this season.”
MMS plays Tuesday at Abilene.
