LINDSBORG— Gil Navarro is the new assistant men’s soccer coach at Bethany College.
"It's exciting to have Gil be a part of the Bethany College soccer program," Bethany coach Shane Taylor said. "He's the perfect fit for our program and will bring new energy and experience to all areas of the assistant coach position."
Navarro is a 2012 graduate of Bethany College, where he played soccer for two years, 2009 and 2010. Serving as team captain both years, he was named honorable mention All-KCAC as a junior and second-team All-KCAC as a senior. As a Swede, he recorded eight goals and 10 assists, helping lead the squad to the playoffs for the first time in four years.
Upon graduation, Navarro served as a student assistant coach for the Swedes in 2011 and 2012, and a volunteer assistant coach in 2013, assisting the Swedes to consecutive playoff appearances in 2012 and 2013.
"I would like to thank coach Taylor and Bethany College for giving me my first coaching job," Navarro said. "As a team, we all expect to win on and off the field and that is what we are going to do as a program. With the commitment of the coaching staff and players, I can see our team achieving our goals and continue with the winning success we've had in the past."
Prior to coming to Bethany, Navarro attended Feather River College in 2007 and 2008. He started every game there, serving as team captain in 2008 as well as earning first-team All-Golden Valley Conference. During his career at Feather River College, Navarro tallied eight goals and five assists.
A native of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Navarro graduated from South Tahoe High School in 2007. He holds an Associate of Science degree in health and exercise science from Feather River College, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in pre K-12 physical education and health from Bethany College.
