Perhaps what Thursday’s McPherson High Invitational Tennis Tournament proved more than anything else was that the Bullpups have a lot of depth.
The Bullpups entered two teams in the nine-team event and wound up taking first and fifth place, respectively.
The Bullpups’ Red team, the top six, raced to 80 points to leave Class 6A Derby well back in second place with 54 points.
Valley Center was third with 46, followed by Newton (43) and the MHS White team (42).
Rounding out the order were Goddard Eisenhower (40), Great Bend (34), Wichita West (18) and Douglass (5).
After vacillating about his lineup, MHS coach Tyler Brown went with what worked last year. Ellea Ediger, last year’s Class 4A singles runner-up, won the division by going 4-0 on the day, while Katlyn Reifschneider, sixth in the state last year, took third with a 3-1 record.
Ediger was an 8-2 winner in the finals against Derby’s Ashley Sherrow.
Defending Class 4A champions Emily Ediger and Camry Holle ran into a buzzsaw in the doubles finals, losing 8-1 to Great Bend’s top-seeded team of Macy Moyers and Morgan Francis, who also won the McPherson Invitational doubles title last year and took fourth in Class 5A. Ediger and Holle were 3-1 on the day.
Riley Burghart and Madison Hoffman combined to play doubles, going 2-2 for fourth place.
For the MHS White squad, Rachel Ivers had a nice day by going 2-2 for fourth in singles, while Shelby Gudenkauf was 2-3 for 12th.
In doubles, Cassidy Corrigan and Maisie Edmonson went 3-1 for ninth place, and Caroline May and Ashley Venable were 3-2 for 11th.
