United Way of McPherson County will officially kickoff Campaign 2014 “Chapter 4 Change” by hosting the McPherson Chamber Coffee on Thursday, September 11, 9:30-11:00 a.m., at the Cedars Wellness Center. The celebration will highlight the $225,000 campaign goal, the campaign video and an information fair featuring United Way partner agencies. All McPherson County residents are invited to attend the free event.

According to Anne Kirchner, executive director for United Way of McPherson County, the information fair is the first step to telling the United Way story. “This year’s campaign theme is focused on sharing the news about our ongoing work,” said Kirchner. “Our efforts include collaborating with local human service organizations as we all strive toward improving our community by addressing issues related to education, health and income.”

Select restaurants will support the campaign by hosting “Dine and Donate” events. Patrons are invited to dine on designated dates with a percentage of net sales benefitting United Way. Participating restaurants in McPherson include Freddy’s Frozen Custard (September 8, 5-9 p.m.); Wendy’s (September 29, 5-8 p.m.); Little Caesars Pizza (November 11, 4-8 p.m.); and Taco John’s (November 28-December 29 featuring NACHOS NAVIDAD promotion).

Additional campaign activities include the Cruisers Car Show on Saturday, September 13, at Lakeside Park where United Way will provide the concession stand from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On November 8, the McPherson Family YMCA will sponsor the UNITED WE RUN 5K/10K with all net proceeds going to United Way. The support we receive during the annual campaign is overwhelming,” noted Kirchner. “These activities are another way for us to reach a diverse segment of the community and to demonstrate the impact of collaboration.”

According to Kirchner, the most exciting element of this year’s campaign is a reading initiative designed to inspire and engage the younger generation. “The project was develop with great thought and purpose and is United Way’s gift back to the community,” she said.

United Way of McPherson County has authored a children’s book focused on volunteerism. Efforts are underway to distribute the book to Pre-K and Kindergarten students throughout McPherson County. The project will incorporate adult volunteers representing county-wide libraries, school districts and preschools. Children will learn about community service and will be encouraged to design their own service projects. The reading initiative is funded by a grant from the Kansas Health Foundation’s Children’s Fund administered by the McPherson County Community Foundation.
