Hesston boys, SV's Shannon come up big

LINDSBORG — Defending Class 3A boys cross country champion Hesston outlasted a challenge from Smoky Valley Thursday to win the Vikings’ Invitational contested in blast-furnace conditions.

The Swathers scored 21 points to 25 for the Vikings. Trinity Catholic was third with 32, while Sterling (52), Haven (74) and Nickerson (105) completed the order.

Haven won the girls’ division with 17, with Hesston (20) and Sterling (31) also fielding full teams.

Highlights for Hesston and Smoky Valley:

• 9th-10th girls — Smoky Valley’s Paige Talbott was second in 20:05, while Hesston’s Rebeeca Heddin was fourth in 21:15.

• 11th-12th girls — Hesston’s Mikala Heddin ran away and hid from the field in 17:31, more than two minutes ahead of second-place Bre Jones of Haven and it was the best overall girls’ time. Smoky Valley’s Sophia Peterson was third in 20:32.

• 9th-10th boys — Smoky Valley sensation Calvin Shannon exploded to an easy victory as the freshman ran 18:42 to win in a walk and he also had the day’s best time. The Vikings had two other Top 5 runners in Logan Windholz (3rd in 20:19) and Isaac Peterson (5th in 20:54).

• 11th-12th boys — It was all Hesston, as the Swathers finished 1-2-3 — Austin Bollinger (18:52), Luccas Schmucker (19:53) and Kelson Claassen (19:58).
