Four minutes into the season, the McPherson ninth-grade football team had already given up more points than it did the entire season last year as undefeated eighth-graders.
The Bullpups shockingly found themselves behind 12-0 to a Salina South team they had manhandled as middle schoolers as the Cougars broke off a pair of long TD runs that totaled 140 yards.
So this is high school, the Bullpups must have been thinking.
But once MHS settled down, it must have felt like middle school all over again. The Bullpups outscored South 56-6 the rest of the way for a 56-18 victory.
MHS scored the final 20 points of the first half for a 20-12 lead, then scored three more times in the third quarter to pull away.
The Bullpups spread the wealth. Jayse Alexander, Wyatt Seidl and Gunnar Reiss scored two touchdowns each. Joe Martinez and Andrew Powell added a score apiece. Scoring 2-point conversions were Seidl, Drew Labertew, Mason Alexander and Michael Mendez.
Labertew and Alexander alternated quarters at quarterback. Alexander threw a pair of TD passes, while the other six scores were on runs.
This group will have perhaps its sternest test since its existence on Monday when it travels to Andale.
