Fearless Forecaster stumbles to 14-5 start

Fearless Forecaster limped out of the first week of football predictions with a 14-5 record, needing a big week to return near his 80-percent goal.

FF failed miserably in AVCTL Division III games, misfiring on McPherson, El Dorado and Winfield. The area miss was Little River’s win over Rural Vista, while our picker had only one blemish in the KCAC, that being nationally ranked Sterling being upset by Concordia.

• AVCTL DIVISION III •

• Andale 49, McPherson 34 — Look for a steady dose of Hunter Knoblauch sweeps around the end. MHS could not stop that last week and Knoblauch is a much more quality back. Keeping him under 250 yards could be a chore.

• Buhler 48, Mulvane 13 — The Crusaders are smoking-mad after being punished last week by Knoblauch and Company. Mulvane lost to El Dorado, which doesn’t bode well.

• El Dorado 20, Augusta 6 — The Wildcats were D-III’s only success story last week. Look for them to start 2-0.

• Winfield 27, Rose Hill 12 — Not quite sure what to make of Winfield. To lose by 21 to county rival Arkansas City was startling

• Last week — 3-3. Season — 3-3.

• McPHERSON AREA •

• Peabody 46, Canton-Galva 24 — Peabody will be a polar-opposite opponent for the Eagles.

• Hesston 34, Halstead 14 — The Swathers are going to be a little more methodical than last year when they had Ryan Schadler hitting home runs with 60- and 70-yard runs

• Ell-Saline 28, Moundridge 7 — Scoring points is going to be a problem for the Wildcats.

• Inman 12, Bennington 6 — Look for a low-scoring defensive slugfest.

• Little River 44, Centre 32 — These teams always play a wide-open, entertaining game.

• Smoky Valley 28, Sterling 7 — The Vikings will bounce back. They could run for big yards this week.

• Last week — 4-1. Season — 4-1.

• KCAC •

• MidAmerica Nazarene 34, McPherson College 17 — The element of surprise (MidAmerica has not played and has a new coach which means a new system) will have the Bulldogs adjusting on the fly.

• Bethany College 27, Graceland 14 — The Swedes’ ground game should wear down Graceland.

• Avila 34, Bethel 21 — Bethel opened impressively against Haskell, but it did last year as well before finishing 2-9.

• Missouri Valley 19, Tabor 17 — This is one of four games matching ranked teams.

• Baker 24, Sterling 13 — The defending KCAC champs start 0-2.

• Ottawa 27, Benedictine 24 — Score one for the KCAC.

• Evangel 21, Southwestern 7 — Southwestern is probably shaken after being blown out by Oklahoma Baptist.

• Friends 17, Peru State 14 — This is the other game of ranked teams I see going the KCAC’s way.

• Saint Mary 45, Culver-Stockton 42 — Don’t look for a lot of defense in this one.

• Central Methodist 28, Kansas Wesleyan 23 — Since it’s a toss-up, go with the home team.

• Last week — 7-1. Season — 7-1.
