The McPherson Fire Department is flying an American flag on its ladder truck today in honor of Patriot's Day.
McPherson Fire Chief Jeff Deal told Mid Kansas Online, "That very fateful day [in 2001] kind of impacted all of us who serve in this business in a very dramatic way. We'd never had 343 of our brothers who went down in one situation. The magnitude of that was very impactful to us. It really brought to light the exact intensity of what we do on a daily basis. We take this opportunity every September 11th, not only to honor the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on that day, but to also pay tribute to all of those who sacrifice each and every day to do this job, to make sure that their communities are taken care of and looked after and protected."
Deal added that today is a day that those who serve look inward. Deal said, "As much as we appreciate everybody else's comments and interest, it's a very introspective and a reflective day for us. We take a lot of time to just sit quietly and think about what it is that this job means to do, and what it means to possibly pay the ultimate price."
