McPherson’s eighth-grade girls volleyball team entered Saturday’s McPherson Invitational having not won a match in four attempts.
But the Bullpups turned things around, winning their first three matches before losing in the championship match to Salina Lakewood.
“The girls were finally able to finish a close game and got their first three wins of the season,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “In the second set of the championship, the girls fought back from being down 7-15, to take a two-point lead at 21-19. However, Lakewood then took advantage of a few of our serve receive and dig errors to capture the championship. Hopefully the confidence gained from today's second-place finish will carry over into next week and the rest of the season.”
MMS went 2-0 in pool play, defeating Salina Lakewood (17-25, 25-23, 15-13) and Clay Center (25-8, 25-8). The Bullpups took out Smoky Valley in the semifinals (25-23, 25-9) before losing to Lakewood (22-25, 21-25).
The Bullpups are now 3-5 on the season.
The Bullpup B-team remained unbeaten on the season with four straight wins and is now 8-0. The pool wins were against Salina South (25-15, 25-22) and Hutchinson (20-25, 25-15, 15-11). The Bullpups blew out Chapman in the semifinals (25-9, 25-2) and then dominated Salina Lakewood in the finals (25-20, 25-11).
“The girls played great again and were able to take first place,” Gehrt said. “They are playing as a team and everyone is contributing.”
