SALINA — McPherson’s eighth-grade girls volleyball team appears to have found its form after a rocky start to its season.
The Bullpups went 3-0 on Tuesday to make it six wins in the last seven matches after an 0-4 start as they are now 6-5.
MMS took the measure of Sacred Heart (25-11, 25-6), old nemesis Salina Lakewood (25-22, 22-25, 15-4) and Southeast of Saline (25-11, 25-11).
“In the final set against Lakewood, we were able to take advantage of Lakewood's errors and minimize our own mistakes,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “The girls played with a lot of passion and pride to come away with a big win. Against the other two teams, we were able to mix up the lineup slightly and take a few risks with our hits, serves and free balls. Every match the girls are getting a little bit better and becoming more cohesive as a team.”
The B-team made it 10 straight wins without a loss in matches against Sacred Heart (25-1, 25-7) and Southeast of Saline (25-11, 25-9). No match was played against Lakewood.
“We dominated the court tonight,” MMS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “We were able to try some girls in different positions today and everyone stepped up their game. Like last weekend when Megan Saverino served 21 in a row, Rachel Janzen served 20 in a row tonight. They both showed great focus from the serving line.”
The A-team is off until a week from Thursday when it travels to Hays, while the B-team hosts a tournament at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
