The McPherson Chamber of Commerce and the McPherson Industrial Development Company are collaborating to celebrate National Manufacturing Day which is officially scheduled for Friday, October 3, 2014. The two entities are working with manufacturers, educational institutions and others to think of creative, fun and educational ways to recognize McPherson's manufacturers and solid industrial base.
The importance of manufacturing to the national and the local economy cannot be overstated. Manufacturing plays a key role in an economy's viability and sustainability. Manufacturing jobs touch upon all aspects of an economy. Almost all jobs within an economy are directly or indirectly dependent on manufacturing. Furthermore, it is estimated by some economists that for every manufacturing job created, as many as four additional jobs are created and that the wages from that job revolve around the community as many as seven times.
Brad Eilts, Executive Director of the McPherson Industrial Development Company, says, "Manufacturing Day activities help to create awareness about the incredible value of industry to our community and the potential career opportunities that exist in manufacturing. It always amazes me the skills of the employees and the scope of the products that are produced in our community and locations where they are shipped to on a daily basis."
Jennifer Burch, Executive Director of the McPherson Chamber of Commerce added, "I am very excited for this opportunity to bring recognition to all our industry and manufacturers in our community and county. We are so very fortunate to have such diversity in our business sector that drives our economy that offers many different rewarding careers. We want to encourage the general public, educators, students, suppliers, customers, etc. to take the time to learn about manufacturing and its expansive reach. This experience we hope will also create positive impressions in students and in the general public about manufacturing and industry jobs."
To kick off this year's event, McPherson Mayor Tom Brown will sign a proclamation designating October the month to celebrate manufacturing in McPherson County. An open house and tour of Viega LLC at 2211 Viega Avenue is scheduled for Friday, October 3rd. Viega is a manufacturer of cross-like polyethylene (PEX), fittings, accessories and tools for plumbing and hydronic markets. Tours will begin at 8:00 a.m. and be conducted every half hour until noon. To participate, you must go online to www.mfgday.com and complete the "attend event" section.
Many people have seen their over 400,000 square foot facility along I-135, but few know what they do.
This year's celebration will feature the open houses, public tours, career workshops and other activities to increase public awareness of modern manufacturing.
More than 1,500 manufacturing events across the country are estimated to mark the third annual Manufacturing Day taking place Friday, October 3rd, according to event co-producers. Manufacturing Day is designed to introduce as many people as possible to the important role played by manufacturing both in local communities and for the nation. The 2013 celebration included 831 official events.
