LOST SPRINGS — Eighteen was the magic number for Canton-Galva cross country runners Lane Wiens and Brittany Dieker on Thursday in the Centre Invitational.

Wiens ran 20:56 in the boys’ race for 18th and Dieker was 18th in 19:49 in the girls’ race.  They were the only Eagle runners in the varsity races.

“Lane and Brittany both ran good races again today,” C-G coach Lyle Silsby said. “They both were able to move up during the race and improve their placings in the second half of their races. Even  though their times were not as fast as last week, they ran better tactical races. This was our first time running at this meet, and it was a nice course and easy to run on.”

Boys JV runners were Cash Toews (10th in 22:24) and Trey Wedel (33rd in 32:09). For the girls, Julia Gormley was an excellent fourth (22:08), while other runners were Krystal May (17th in 27:57) and Kaylee Littrell (18th in 27:59).

“Cash made a big move after the first mile to move into 10th place and was able to hold that place until the end,” Silsby said. “Julia got to run her first race of the year, and of her life, and did an awesome job.  She started slowly because she did not know what to expect, but moved up steadily throughout the race to finish fourth.”

The Eagles compete Tuesday at Marion.
