HAYS — McPherson’s eighth-grade volleyball team was saddled with a pair of setbacks Tuesday after making the long trip to Hays.
The Bullpups lost to the host team (15-25, 21-25) and then to old nemesis Salina Lakewood (21-25, 23-25).
“In the first game against Hays, it was pretty even and we were doing good things until we ran into one of their good servers that managed to serve 12 straight points to give them the win,” MMS coach Shelly Bohme said. “We just could not break the serve. I think we were down on ourselves going into the second set and couldn't get out of that. Missed serves and too many unforced errors plagued us against Lakewood. However, we were down in the second set and made a great comeback, we just fell short. That game was probably the most fun I've seen the girls have. We just need to figure out how to keep our energy level up all the time.”
The B-team also lost. The first match was against Hays (14-25, 20-25) and then the Bullpups lost a three-setter to Lakewood (25-23, 14-25, 10-15).
“The girls played pretty well today,” MMS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “We served better than our last tournament, but still need to work on our passing. We gave up too many points from poor passing. We had some good hits and our energy level was high throughout both games.”
MMS is now off until Oct. 2
