HAYS — Both the A-team and B-team split Thursday, as the McPherson eighth-grade volleyball squads journeyed to Hays.
The A-team lost to Hays (12-25, 19-25), but defeated Colby (25-14, 25-16).
The Bullpups are now 7-6.
“This was the first time we have played Hays this season. They played well against us and we helped them by missing serving and having other unforced errors,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “We played timid the first set and once we started to be more aggressive, good things happened. In the match against Colby, we were able to shake things up a little bit and take a few more risks with our hitting and serving. Overall the girls are improving and we are coming down to the late three dates of competition of the season. Hopefully we’ll peak at the right time.”
The B-team suffered its first loss with a 20-25, 22-25 setback to Hays, but bounced back for a 25-7, 25-6 rout of Colby.
The Bullpups are now 15-1.
“We had 11 serving errors in the match (against Hays), as well as five different times we we let the ball drop to the floor,” MMS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “We had a hard time getting started after the hot bus trip and the warm gym. Hays had a very good defensive team, letting few balls hit the floor. In game two, we came back and won against Colby easily.”
MMS plays Oct. 7 at Salina Lakewood.
