HAYS — The McPherson eighth-grade “Avengers” were at it again on Thursday.
For the third straight game, the Bullpup football team avenged a loss from last year as their magical turnaround season continued.
MMS, which won just one game last year, outlasted Hays 16-6 behind the strength of a fine defensive effort. Hays won last year’s matchup as seventh-graders, 22-0.
“The defense got better and better as the day went on,” MMS coach Brandon Labertew said. “They gave up 64 yards on the first drive of the game and then for the rest of the day they only gave up a total of 99 yards. They made several stops in the second half.”
Brandon Yowell had three pass breakups. Jace Kinnamon had five tackles and an interception that sealed the victory and Honestee Whittker also had five tackles.
On offense, Kyler Hoppes sneaked in for a pair of touchdowns, with Kinnamon and Elijah Muehler catching 2-point conversions. Muehler had a 67-yard punt return that set up a touchdown.
Whittker rushed for 41 yards on 11 carries, while Kinnamon had three catches out of the backfield for 55 yards.
MMS plays Thursday at Pratt.
