The prospects for a McPherson High girls tennis state championship repeat may have gotten a little bit brighter today.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association released its new classifications a few days early. McPherson High remained in Class 4A with an enrollment of 700, well below the cut line of 760.
However, Wichita Collegiate — the defending Class 3-2-1A girls state tennis champion and ranked No. 1 again this year — did not move up to 4A as expected. Collegiate’s final count was 262, with the bottom school in 4A being 265.
Of note, Hays will be 4A for all sports now, not just football, as it drops down from 5A. Andover Central, which had been in 4A, moves up to 5A, which is good news for the Bullpup volleyball team.
In other 4A notes, Holcomb, Thomas More Prep and Rock Creek move up from 3A to 4A. Russell, Burlington and Scott City go from 4A down to 3A.
A note for area schools, Hillsboro goes from 2A to 3A, which could help the likes of Moundridge, Canton-Galva, Inman and Little River.
